OUR PROGRAM
Mising Language Day Celebration
The Mising Language Day Celebration is one of the most significant cultural observances of the Mising community. It is dedicated to honoring, preserving, and promoting the Mising language (Mising Agom), which is a vital part of the community's identity, history, and heritage. The day commemorates the official recognition of the Mising language and serves as a reminder of the responsibility to protect and pass it on to future generations.
For the Mising people, language is more than a means of communication—it carries traditional knowledge, folklore, songs, customs, values, and the collective history of the community. The celebration inspires people of all ages, especially young generations, to learn, speak, read, and write the Mising language with pride. The Mising language belongs to the Tani branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family and represents a rich indigenous cultural heritage of Assam.
The celebration is marked by a variety of educational, literary, and cultural activities, including language awareness programs, seminars, essay and speech competitions, traditional songs and dances, poetry recitations, storytelling sessions, cultural performances, and recognition of individuals who have contributed to the promotion of the Mising language. Community leaders, scholars, students, and cultural organizations come together to reaffirm their commitment to preserving their linguistic heritage. The Mising Re'ngam Association of Bangalore (MRAB) proudly celebrates Mising Language Day to unite the Mising community living in Bangalore while promoting the language among children, youth, and adults. Through language classes, cultural events, and community gatherings, the association encourages every member to embrace their mother tongue and remain connected to their roots despite living away from their homeland.
The celebration also reflects the global importance of protecting indigenous and mother languages. Just as UNESCO promotes linguistic diversity through International Mother Language Day, the Mising community continues its efforts to ensure that the Mising language remains vibrant, respected, and alive for future generations.
Our Message
A language is the soul of a community. By preserving the Mising language today, we preserve our identity, culture, traditions, and history for tomorrow.

Ali A Lígang The Festival of Agriculture, Culture and Unity
Meaning of
"Ali A Lígang
Ali A Lígang is the most important and vibrant traditional festival of the Mising community. It is a celebration of agriculture, nature, culture, and community life, marking the beginning of the sowing season for Ahu paddy. Celebrated every year on the first Wednesday of the Mising month of Gimur Polo (mid-February), the festival symbolizes hope, prosperity, and gratitude for a successful agricultural year.
The name Ali A Lígang is derived from three Mising words: Ali – Roots, seeds, or edible plants A – Fruit or seed Lígang – To sow or begin planting
Together, the name represents "the ceremonial beginning of sowing seeds", reflecting the deep agricultural heritage of the Mising people.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Traditional Rituals
The Mising people have traditionally been an agricultural community whose livelihood has always depended on farming and harmony with nature. Ali A Lígang marks the beginning of a new farming season and is an occasion to pray for fertile land, timely rainfall, healthy crops, and a plentiful harvest.
Beyond agriculture, the festival reflects the Mising philosophy of respecting nature, living in harmony with the environment, and strengthening family and community relationships. It has been celebrated for generations and continues to be one of the strongest symbols of Mising identity and cultural pride.
The celebration begins with a ceremonial sowing of seeds by the head of each family in a small portion of the field while offering prayers for prosperity and protection of the crops.
During the festival, certain agricultural activities such as ploughing, tree cutting, and burning forests are traditionally avoided as a mark of respect for nature and the sacred beginning of the farming season.
Gumrag Dance and Oi: Nitom Songs
Traditional Food
One of the most beautiful highlights of Ali A Lígang is the Gumrag dance, performed by young men and women dressed in colorful traditional Mising attire.
The dance is accompanied by Oi: Nitom, traditional folk songs that express love, happiness, unity, respect for nature, and everyday life. Traditional musical instruments such as drums, cymbals, and gongs create a joyful atmosphere that brings the entire community together.
Food plays an important role in the celebration. Families and communities prepare a variety of traditional Mising dishes, including:
>Purang Apin (rice cooked in leaves)
>Pork and fish preparations
>Bamboo shoot dishes
>Various indigenous vegetables
>Apong (traditional rice beverage)
The community feast symbolizes friendship, hospitality, and the spirit of sharing.
